Healing: The Practice of Holistic Care in Adlerian Psychology

The epidemic has raged for three years, but at last, a glimmer of hope has emerged. However, the world remains far from peaceful. Distant wars, looming conflicts, economic instability, and the sweeping changes of our time continue to cause suffering. Yet, amid this turmoil, individuals remain interconnected, supporting and healing one another.

A century ago, amidst a period of great turbulence, Alfred Adler introduced the theory of Individual Psychology, which profoundly influenced future generations. His theory emphasized social interest, the holistic understanding of the human being, and pioneered the concept of purposeful behavior. A hundred years later, across the ocean in Taiwan, a dedicated group of individuals has been quietly applying Adler’s psychological principles to various fields, including child therapy, school education, addressing violence, and even as a tool for interpreting classic literature.

The 2023 TSAP Annual Conference, themed “Healing: The Practice of Holistic Care in Adlerian Psychology,” welcomes Prof. Li-Juan Ou from the Department of Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University as the keynote speaker. Prof. Ou will explore human nature and transcendence in the classic novel The Dream of the Red Chamber through the lens of Adlerian theory.

In addition, the conference will feature three keynote discussions with frontline educators and professionals from the helping fields, including Prof. C.N. Liu, psychologist P.C. Huang, and Mr. Shun-Chung Bao. They will address the practical applications of Adlerian psychology in various aspects of life and discuss how to integrate these time-tested psychological concepts and strategies into contemporary Taiwanese society.

The conference will conclude with small group dialogues, allowing participants to reflect on the day’s learning and explore further possibilities for practical application. The workshop series will include sessions led by psychologists Dr. Terry Kottman and Dr. Renhao Liu, who will facilitate “Adlerian Play Therapy Reading,” and by neuropsychiatrist Dr. Weiren Chen, who will lead the workshop, titled “When Psychology Meets Brain Science”.
